If possible, contact your building management at least three weeks before moving day. Here are the specific questions you want to ask:
- Do I need to reserve the elevator? How far in advance?
- Are there designated loading zones, or do I need street parking?
- What are the permitted moving hours?
- Do I need a certificate of insurance from my movers?
- Are there any seasonal restrictions or blackout dates?
- What’s the policy on holding elevator pads and door protection?
Write down the answers. Get the contact information for the person who handles move coordination. You’ll likely need to follow up.

Reserve more space than you think you need, because moving trucks need room to maneuver, especially on narrow streets like Kirkwood Road or on the tight blocks near Lyon Village. Beyond the length of your truck, you need space to roll out the ramp and have a safe walking path.
When No Official Options Exist
Sometimes you’re on your own. Maybe your building near Clarendon doesn’t have a loading zone, and street parking is first-come, first-served.
In these cases, your best bet is to schedule your move for early morning, ideally starting at 7 AM when parking is most available. Weekdays often work better than weekends because fewer residents are home and there’s less foot traffic to restaurants like Northside Social or shopping destinations.
You’ll also want to have a backup plan. Scout nearby parking options the week before so you’ll know where your movers can position the truck if your first choice is taken.
Set Up for Smooth and Easy Loading
The faster loading goes, the less time you’re blocking access and inconveniencing neighbors.
Create Clear Pathways
Before your movers arrive, walk the route from your unit to the truck. Remove obstacles. Prop doors open. Clear hallway clutter.
Protect Common Areas

Some places allow you to post a courtesy notice a few days before your move. Your notice would include the date of your move, the approximate time window, and your contact information.
If you’re blocking parking spaces or access areas, give neighbors extra warning. They might need to adjust their parking, especially if they’re heading to work in DC or planning a weekend trip to Roosevelt Island or the Mount Vernon Trail.
