Carefully organizing your storage unit helps prevent items from toppling or being damaged. Your efforts also make it easier to find what you’re looking for when you need to retrieve something from storage. Fill and organize your storage unit properly from the start using these tips.
Choose a Unit that Fits Your Needs
Storage solutions come in many shapes, sizes, and price ranges. At Georgetown Moving and Storage Company, our storage units measure 7’ high by 5’ wide by 7’ deep and hold about 150 to 180 cubic feet. You can store everything from boxes of books and memorabilia to small pieces of furniture in our storage units.
Rather than "self" solutions where storage units are accessible to everyone, our portable units are stacked and stored in a warehouse. This “portable vault” system is economical, safe, secure, and costs less than self-storage.
Pack Your Boxes Carefully
First, choose no more than two sizes of boxes to make stacking easier. Fill each box with like items as full as possible. You may need to top off book boxes with lighter objects to prevent them from getting too heavy. Label each box with a number and make a thorough list of the contents so you can quickly find what you’re looking for when you need it.
Store Your Boxes Intentionally
Place heavier book boxes on the bottom of each stack while reserving boxes full of breakables for the top. Line the back wall with belongings you’re not likely to need soon, reserving the front of the storage unit for frequently accessed items. Consider leaving an aisle down the center of the unit so accessing that bottom back corner box isn’t so difficult.
Store Furniture Properly
Remove table legs to save space. Use the hollow areas of big furniture to store a box or two. Cover upholstered furniture with plastic to protect it. Store mirrors upright to help prevent them from breaking.
